I always enjoyed designing and studied architecture but found I wasn't cut out for endless hours at a desk and eventually arrived at carpentry. I like working with my hands and I like the satisfaction of a quality completed job and happy clients

Do you have a favourite customer story you would like to share?

I converted a garage to a music studio in Edithvale in 2020 just as the pandemic was kicking off and the guy who used it is a sax player and teaches saxophone at uni and it was his mother in laws place. He was really happy with the studio. He and his partner bought a house since then and don't use the studio anymore but he said that having that there and being able to play sax freely allowed him to stay sane and happy through the lockdowns.

What do you like most about your job?

It is always good when clients see the project progressing and get excited about how the space is emerging and becoming real. The 'wow' factor as the finishing touches are put on. One client once told me at lunchtime on a sweltering 40 degree day that the studio space that I made in his converted garage was only 24 degrees, without air conditioning. To have clients thank you for your work and say that they are getting good use out of the space is a great feeling.

What questions should a customer ask to hire the right service professional?

This is a very subjective thing. Obviously the tradie needs to know what they are doing and be able to deliver the project. However different people approach tasks in different ways. There is more than one way to skin a cat and it can be good to find a tradie with a similar ethos or approach to your own.

Customers are often unsure how you will make something work structurally, how you will build something. I think it is important to take your time to explain these things and I like to draw diagrams to help shed light on the process.

I always try and build to a high quality and avoid cutting corners. "A stitch in time saves nine" as the saying goes.

I really like passive solar design and green building and I love doing curvy lime rendered garden beds and working with limewash.

What experience, skills, qualifications or training do you have to make you the right person for the job?

I'm not just a carpenter, I've also studied architecture and did my cert IV building and construction. This means I have a robust and well rounded knowledge of the many layers and levels of design and construction which allows me to "think on my feet" and come up with optimal solutions throughout your project.
