We hired RKS for a major landscaping project that involved excavating a frontyard, backyard and side passage, putting up a retaining wall, lifting drainage pits, irrigation for the lawn. Through the quotation stages, he was highly responsive and seemed flexible in his approach to tailor the job to meet our needs in an effort to save on cost. The key reasons why we granted him the role was he was local, his formal quote claimed to have his own machines and he would charge only for operator fees $80/hr, and beyond this it would be $50/hr for labour, as long as materials were procured by us. This seemed to be reasonably priced. On the day of the job, his machine wasn’t available and he got someone else’s machine in. On the second day he got his machine which didn’t work and claimed to be waiting on a part which would be sorted in a few days (4 weeks later he was still waiting on a part), and needed machinery to operate for which he asked if I could pay for the hire, in wanting to finish the job asap and empathising with the situation I agreed to pay for the machinery under the premise that he estimated 3-5 days of machine hire. Despite paying for the machine hire, there was no reduction in his operator fees. Since then after commencing the excavation, machinery was needed for almost 3 weeks for which I paid for, again with no reduced operator costs. This would have all been fine, if the job was completed as per his promises, however it always seemed to be a case of over promise and under deliver, as an example our side passage needed excavation, replacement of a storm water pipe, laying of retaining wall blocks for which he estimated 1 day of excavation, 1 day for the storm water pipes, and 1 day for the blocks; this actually worked out to be 3 days of excavation, about 3 days on the blocks and 1 day on the stormwater drains, this delay wasn’t because the job was too complicated, but more so because he had to double handle these things as a result of poor planning, Despite this, we maintained a positive view towards Robbie as he worked hard, was polite and friendly, but this negative review is mostly driven because of the approach towards the end of the job. When I offered to pay him for his time, I was responsible for procuring the material, Robbie offered to pick this up from Bunnings. I paid him for the materials and gave him $4100 for the procurement of materials, for which he didn’t get all of the materials and in some cases got cheaper materials e.g pine posts instead of cypress. Noting that more material would be needed as the job progressed, we agreed on settling this towards the end of the job, Robbie claimed he’d get a receipt from Bunnings. 4 weeks later, after reminding him weekly about getting the receipt, we still haven’t been able to get a receipt. As per his claims Bunnings can’t reprint receipts over more than a $1000. As we reach the end of the job, we have overpaid him by $1400 in materials, and lost over $4000 in overcharges and equipment hire that was always meant to be included as a part of his cost per hour. Furthermore, we’ve had to refix several things from incorrectly fitted pits to incorrect levels of soils being laid. As it turns out the final approach to returning the money overpaid to him, is he’ll do it when he gets a chance to do it, but when it was a matter of him getting paid he wished to get paid immediately. If you’re after a competent landscaper for a major project, I would recommend looking elsewhere. If you’re after a handy person to address minor landscaping issues at an overpriced rate, go with RKS.Susan P
