Are you an insured business and do you guarantee your work?

Our company will guarantee all work completed and should the work undertaken include onsite specialists, tradespeople and service providers, all the necessary insurances shall be applied according to works program.

How did you decide to get into your line of work?

As a little girl, I was always very keen on decorating my bedroom with colour and accessories. My parents were very understanding and allowed me to do so.  I have been designing for over 30 years.  I was married to an architect for twenty of those years and am now married to a lawyer.  It was my marriage to an architect that really inspired me to get into interior design. However, there is so much dishonesty in my industry which is why I also conduct interior decor and design courses. These course are for people wishing to pursue a career in decor and design or people building or redecorating homes. The courses familiarize course attendees with the basics of interior design work or home design project.  I would like to see my industry more regulated for the benefit of the general public.

Do you have a favourite customer story you would like to share?

I have many happy customer stories. I do not have favourite customers as such.  I have a lot of repeat customer stories, some of which I have complete several of their homes and offices.

What do you like most about your job?

Accepted Answer

Meeting people and working with them to achieve the interior design outcomes at minimal cost. I especially enjoy working with people who have minimal budgets.  People on minimal budgets have a greater sense of appreciation which leaves me with a "job well done" "I'm happy" attitude.  Interior designers are not exclusively for the benefit of "well healed" people.  This is seems to be the attitude of the general public unfortunately which is incorrect.

What questions should a customer ask to hire the right service professional?

Is the designer qualified? Do you have any references of previous work and clients? What is your hourly rate? Do you also retain supplier commissions. (In all cases, the designer should disclose this information as hidden commissions, unless previously divulged to the client, are illegal under the Trade Practices Act.).

What questions do customers commonly ask and how would you answer them?

The most common question asked is what are your services and what do you charge.  My response is always ................"I charge according to work required" i.e. is it purely a consultation or ongoing interior design services.  In both cases the fees are charged according to time spend and out of pocket expenses.

What makes you the most reliable and trustworthy person for the job?

Clients should be mindful that the most reliable and trustworthy people with whom to work are those who have vast experience and can provide at least three references of recently completely work to include the names, telephone numbers of those clients.

Why should a customer hire you over another service provider?

Accepted Answer

Judith is an accredited professional interior designer having over 30 years experience in commercial, residential, retail and medical.  Advice may be provided on the spot for a one off fee $250.00 or more detailed documents can be supplied if required for an additional fee.

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

In order to provide a fixed quotation, it is imperative that the designer take a full brief of work required from the client.  Following the brief instructions the designer may then assess the time taken and expenditure necessary (ie travelling, photocopying, measuring the site, drawings if required, contact with specialist consultants or suppliers etc) to complete the work to the client's satisfaction.

How can a customer save money before you start the work? Please give 3 tips

Clients may help save time therefore money by collecting images of their interior design or decor preferences before the consultation thus providing the designer with predetermined selections.  By the designer providing an initial one hour consultation and following assessment, it may be the case that the work required may be a simple painting or lighting solution rather than a full scale redecoration and redesign.  I have two methods of charging being on an hourly basis ($250.00 incl. GST) or if the client wishes to purchase furniture or soft furnishings I will supply the goods at normal retail price for which the designer generally receives a trade price discount from the supplier.  The discount should be disclosed to the client prior to ordering furniture, soft furnishings etc.

Should I be successful in my quotation and the project includes additional ongoing work other than a one hour consultation, then my initial consultation fee of $250.00 (incl. GST) shall be adjusted to $110.00 (incl. GST)

What makes your pricing competitive?

Fees charged are competitive in that I am highly experienced (34 years) therefore efficient in my initial appraisal of the project site and subsequent solutions provided.

How do you normally charge for your service?

A one time home or office consultation with the client in the Perth metropolitan area for up to one hour will cost $250.00 (incl. GST). For work outside the Perth CBD, a travelling fee shall be applied according to time taken and mileage from office back to office.

Is there a particular aspect of your trade or industry that you specialise in?

My scope of work includes high, medium and minimal budget residential, retail and commercial projects from small scale decor work to large complete renovations, new homes or simple one off consultations.

What experience, skills, qualifications or training do you have to make you the right person for the job?

I have a Diploma of Interior Design LTC and a Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessing BSZ40198.  My past professional affiliations have been with Society of Interior Designers and I am currently a Professional Member of the Design Institute of Australia and the Training Council of Western Australia.
