Are you an insured business and do you guarantee your work?

Accepted Answer

All my work is fully guaranteed and I am insured for public liability. The standard guarantee (minimum) is 12 months on electrical installation but other area's come with different guarantees. Solar installations 5 years.

How did you decide to get into your line of work?

I have been self employed for 40 years and as work seems to slow down in one area, i'm quick to start or bring back a past skill . This way I have not been out of work for long and always enjoyed a changing work type.

Do you have a favourite customer story you would like to share?

Accepted Answer

I installed a solar panel system for a customer that I have done work for over 35 years. He sent me an email to say that his electricity bill was $550.00 to $600.00 per quarter and after getting his latest account for $136.00 he was very happy. A week later he sent me another email saying sorry that electricity account said $136.00 Credit. Now i'm even happier.

What do you like most about your job?

The renewable energy work is fantastic. How great is it to produce your own power and not have to rely on another government department. But more than that it incredible technology thats just getting better all the time.

Salespeople win jobs all the time for companies but when it comes time to do the job someone else turns up often a subcontractor who may not take the same care that I would. So who is going to be performing the work?

Why should a customer hire you over another service provider?

My name is Cameron Theiley I have been installing battery storage generated power systems for 40 years. I am an electrician with experiance in General Electrical work , Alarm systems, Data/Computer cabling, Security camera systems, Solar, Batterys, Domestic, Commercial and Industrial. I am able to work on single or three phase systems and hold all current licences.

What are the typical things that you need to know before you can provide a quote to a customer?

All the normal requirements name address phone no. email address. the volume of work and type of jobs to be performed. Does the customer want to supply some materials etc.

How can a customer save money before you start the work? Please give 3 tips

Look at the work they want to get done and the materials or fittings they require. Get all the details, manufacturer name serial or part no. plus cost and what guarantee the items have. Then speak to me I my be able to supply the same equipment with better quality and or cheaper prices due to my trade accounts and years of experience.

What makes your pricing competitive?

You could find a company that would charge you $25.00 per hour or another that my charge $130.00 per hour The company charging $130.00 per hour more than likely has an apprentice (great person) and is more likely to have more experiance and will complete the job in a fifth of the time. A bye yearly contract for a government department was one by an hourly rate being the cheapest. The subcontractor that was doing the work was being paid an hourly rate far in excess than what the goverment was paying. How? I saw an invoice for a $3.00 fluro tube charged out at $96.50 inc. GST. Hourly rate is not everything.

How do you normally charge for your service?

Most jobs these days require a fixed price quotation. This seems like a great idea but in the past we would normally have operated on an hourly rate, this should work out cheaper so it's really up to the individual on how they would like to be charged. I'm very flexible.

Is there a particular aspect of your trade or industry that you specialise in?

My main line of work over the past 10 years has been the renewable energy systems. Solar generation is one aspect but it does not have to end there. the next step along the way is to have battery storage for self use when the sun can not produce enough energy to run your needs. Night time for example, but not just limited to night time, some times in summer when the airconditioner is on and the pool filter is running and you start to use the oven or kettle . The power needs my be more than the solar can supply so the batteries come in to supliment the solar generation.

I completed my electrical training as an apprentice in Adelaide S.A. in 1979  Started in 1975 completed in 1979. I went on to do Refridgeration and Airconditioning , Industrial electronics, Data and security cabling, Battery storage systems, Solar installations, Solar design accreditation, and a no. of others.
